Elk Grove Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram · Jeep Recon Research
Jeep says the Recon is the only fully electric vehicle to be Trail Rated. Here is the hardware behind that claim, how to use it, and where the Recon's limits are compared with a traditional low-range 4x4.
Trail Rated is Jeep's badge for vehicles that pass its off-road test series, which covers five areas: traction, ground clearance, maneuverability, articulation and water fording. Jeep says the Recon is the only fully electric vehicle to earn it.
Jeep's spec sheet notes that the Recon's high-voltage and low-voltage electronics are sealed and waterproof. Jeep.com doesn't list a water-fording depth for the Recon and points owners to the Owner's Manual, so check the manual before you drive into water, and never cross water you can't see the bottom of.
| Mode or feature | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Auto | Everyday driving on pavement and graded dirt |
| Sport | Quickest response on pavement; 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds |
| Snow | Snowy or icy roads, such as winter trips over Echo Summit |
| Sand/Mud | Soft, deep surfaces where you need steady wheel speed |
| Rock | Slow, technical terrain with ledges and loose rock |
| Selec-Speed Control | Holds a set low speed up or down steep grades so you can focus on steering |
| Hill-hold | Keeps the Recon from rolling back when starting on a slope |
On a steep, loose descent, Selec-Speed Control does the job that low range and engine braking do in a gas 4x4. Set a slow speed, keep your feet off the pedals, and steer.
The Recon uses a single-speed transmission with no low-range transfer case. A gas engine needs low range to multiply torque at walking speed, but the Recon's electric motors deliver torque from a standstill and can be metered very precisely. That's why Jeep leans on motor control, Rock mode and Selec-Speed Control instead of gear reduction.
The trade-off is weight and hardware. At 6,112 lb, the Recon is heavy, which matters on soft sand, mud and tight switchbacks. And without a front locker or the very low crawl gearing of a dedicated rock crawler, it isn't built for the most extreme rock trails. For that kind of driving, compare it with the Wrangler in our Recon vs Wrangler guide.

Breakover is the tightest of the three angles, so take sharp crests slowly and at an angle where you can. The full-size spare matters on rocky roads, where a sidewall cut can end a day on a compact spare. If you plan to drive rocky trails, the optional rock rails add protection along the sides.
The Recon suits Forest Service roads and fire roads in the Sierra foothills off Highway 50, sand, snow, rutted ranch roads and moderate rocky sections, with the instant torque and quiet of an electric drive. Plan trail days around range: low-speed off-road driving uses energy, and chargers are rare at the trailhead. Off-road driving involves risk, so travel with another vehicle, carry recovery gear, and know your route before you go.
Yes. Jeep says the Recon is the only fully electric vehicle to be Trail Rated, a badge that covers traction, ground clearance, maneuverability, articulation and water fording.
The Recon Moab has an electronic locking rear differential. The front differential is open, with automatic wheel-end disconnects, and there is no front locker.
No. It uses a single-speed transmission with full-time active 4WD. Electric-motor torque control, Rock mode and Selec-Speed Control handle slow, steep terrain instead.

265/70R18 Nexen Roadian ATX all-terrain tires, about 33 in tall, on 18 x 8.5-in wheels, with a full-size rear spare.
Jeep.com doesn't list a fording depth for the Recon and refers owners to the Owner's Manual. Check the manual before crossing any water.
They're built differently. The Recon uses electric motors and a rear locker, while the Wrangler Rubicon adds front and rear lockers and a 4:1 low-range transfer case for the hardest rock trails.
