Ram ProMaster Cutaway Chassis

The ProMaster 3500 cutaway is the starting point for box trucks, shuttles, camper builds and service bodies. Here are the configurations, the numbers an upfitter needs and how to spec one.

Quick answer: The Ram ProMaster 3500 cutaway comes in three configurations: a 136-in wheelbase with 81 in of cab-to-axle, and a 159-in wheelbase with 104 in of cab-to-axle in standard or extended-frame form. The chassis carries more than 5,200 lb before the body goes on, and it uses the ProMaster's 3.6L V6 and front-wheel drive. The body's weight comes out of that payload.

Rear axle rating5,004 to 5,291 lb, by model

Chassis payload is measured before the body is installed. A box, shuttle or camper body and its equipment can weigh thousands of pounds, so the payload left for cargo or passengers is what remains after the upfit. Ask the body builder for the finished weight before you order.

Why upfitters choose the ProMaster cutaway

  • Low floor. Front-wheel drive means there's no driveshaft running to the rear axle, which helps body builders keep floors low for shuttle passengers, box-truck loading and RV living space.
  • Upfit Interface Connectors come standard, giving body builders a factory connection point for lights and equipment.
  • Upfitter's Prep Package is optional, adding two auxiliary switches and a Vehicle System Interface Module for body controls.
  • Power for equipment: a 180-amp alternator is standard on the cutaway, and a 220-amp alternator is available through the Cold Weather or Power Group.
  • Tight turning for a cab-chassis: 40.7 ft on the 136-in model.

Need a chassis cab instead?

The cutaway is the ProMaster's cab-chassis model: it has an open back that the body attaches to. If your job calls for a flatbed, dump body or a heavier service body, look at the Ram Chassis Cab, offered from 3500 to 5500 with a conventional truck frame and available four-wheel drive.

ProMaster cutaway FAQs

What is the difference between a ProMaster cutaway and a chassis cab?

A cutaway has a van-style cab with an open back, so a body builder can attach a box, shuttle or camper body directly to the cab. A chassis cab has a closed truck cab and a bare frame for flatbeds and service bodies. For 2026, Ram offers the ProMaster as a cutaway; for a chassis cab, look at the Ram Chassis Cab 3500 to 5500.

How much can a Ram ProMaster cutaway carry?

The chassis carries more than 5,200 lb before the body is installed, depending on the model. The weight of the box or body comes out of that number, so the usable payload depends on the upfit.

What wheelbases does the ProMaster cutaway come in?

Three configurations: a 136-in wheelbase with 81 in of cab-to-axle, a 159-in wheelbase with 104 in of cab-to-axle, and a 159-in extended-frame model with the same cab-to-axle and a longer frame.

Is the ProMaster cutaway front-wheel drive?

Yes. Like every ProMaster, the cutaway is front-wheel drive with the 3.6L V6. With no driveshaft to the rear axle, body builders can keep floors low for shuttles, box trucks and RVs.

Can Elk Grove CDJR help with a box truck or shuttle upfit?

Yes. Our commercial team can help you choose the right cutaway configuration and work with the upfitter on the body you need. Contact us to start.
